The Egyptian American Society, under the leadership of renowned Professor Cherif Bassiouni, just sent a letter to President Barack Obama conveying their displeasure with his administration’s policy and direction as it relates to Egypt and the current crisis. In their letter, the society said:

“(we) are just stunned by what continues to be the missteps of your administration’s policy towards the Arab region, and in particular Egypt… We hope that you will seize this opportunity to reassess your administration’s policy and to take into consideration the expert opinion of egyptian Americans”

The letter to President Obama included a position paper with a list of immediate solutions to resolve the current crisis, they included in part:

– Respect for basic human rights, assembly, demonstration and expression without interference from police

– Law enforcement must not engage in any violence against the civilian population

– To remove the current State of Emergency law, which has been in place for the past 30 years

– For President Hosni Mubarak to resign from office and future succession follow according to he existing constitution

– New Presidential elections in 60 days

– After the new president is elected, to convene and dissolve Parliament and call for new legislative elections within 6 months

– New President should appoint a constitution commission to amend the current constitution to make it truly democratic

The position papers concludes by urging President Obama to “support and endorse these recommendations…. (and) to urgently communicate this message to President Mubarak.”
